제목: Temporal integration and segregation of visual signals in multi-level perceptual processes
Visual stimuli are not random, and the visual stimuli in the next moment are highly correlated with the stimuli currently being experienced. Considering the general characteristics of the visual system that internalizes the statistics of the environment and uses accumulated statistics to interpret visual signals, it is expected that the human visual system will integrate visual signals temporally, taking into account the temporal continuity of the environment. As is well known, the visual system perceives a sequence of discontinuous still images, such as in movies, as a continuous smooth motion. Interestingly, the opposite phenomenon has also been reported. Patients with damage to the middle temporal area, known to process motion signals, perceive continuous environmental motion as a sequence of discontinuous events. Even in people with normal vision, when processing stimuli where motion signals and location signals conflict, they perceive continuous motion stimuli as discontinuous. These phenomena indicate that the perceptual experience of continuous environment is not a passive response to stimuli, but rather a result of the visual system's active inference. In this talk, I will introduce various perceptual phenomena that arise during the process of integrating or segmenting sequentially presented visual signals and discuss computational models that can explain these phenomena.
