제목: Development of Neurotechnolgies in Electronic, Photonic, and Molecular Neural Engineering

초록: Modern neuroscience is attempting to "break" the neural code, finessing the spatio-temporal resolution by using invasive microelectrode arrays which aspire to pick up the electrical activity of individual neural cells and their microcircuits. Based on recent advances, there is now the prospect of direct electronic communication with the human neural systems, for which there is compelling medical rationale. There are millions of individuals who suffer from serious neurological impairments, ranging from various neurodegenerative diseases to spinal cord injuries leading complete paralysis. Despite a certain portion of nervous system is compromised due to illness or injuries, the rest of the system might still be working fine and advanced neurotechnologies could play a role to enable such individuals to gain neural functions back by interfacing their functional nervous systems with man-made sensors and actuators. In this talk, I will describe some current progress in this area of neurotechnology that aims to develop neural communication devices connecting the human nervous system and the outside world, thereby enhancing further our understanding how the human nervous system works. Also, included are investigations on the photonic interfaces to the nervous system, using advanced optoelectronics tools. Finally, the talk will be completed by discussing about intra- and intercellular dynamics using high-speed, multi-parallel optical recording and stimulation of optogenetically transfected neuronal cells.
