제목: Challenges in the Clinical Research of Retinal Prosthesis

초록: A retinal prosthesis has been developed to restore vision loss in blind patients by directly stimulating neurons in human visual systems. Several challenges have been encountered in the clinical research of retinal prostheses. These include the discrepancy between stimulated retinotopic map and generated prosthetic vision map, selective stimulation of different types of neurons, unstable neuron-to-electrode interfaces, and biocompatibility of implanted electrodes. These challenges may limit the success of retinal prostheses. In this talk, I will discuss these challenges, mainly focusing on the studies of the retinal ganglion cell stress that occurs at the neuronal interface, which was carried out by employing various micro- and nano-techniques, including near-field scanning optical microscopy, live-cell imaging, single-molecular tracking, microfluidics, and systems biology mathematical modeling.
